Why do photographers need drone insurance?

Drones deliver unique opportunities for creating visually stunning images and are now commonly used by professional photographers and video makers.

Being able to photograph or film from the air can provide a unique perspective on landscapes, properties, cities and events that just aren’t possible from the ground.

Whether you’re creating images for advertising or capturing those extra special shots for a wedding, drone photography can provide a new angle to your photography or videography business.

But did you know that the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requires you to have third party liability insurance if you fly a drone for commercial purposes?

What if your drone is lost, damaged or stolen? If your drone is part of your essential kit, do you have the funds available to replace it – at short notice?

And what would you do if your drone was hi-jacked?

That’s as well as the risk of damage your drone could cause if it malfunctioned and it crashed causing damage to property or even people.

As a professional photographer or videographer offering drone as well as ground-based services, you need to make sure you have the right insurance cover in place.

What does drone insurance for photographers cover?

Drone insurance can be provided as an extension to your main insurance cover if you are a professional photographer or video maker who uses drones as part of your  photography/video making offering.

Drone insurance from Aaduki provides an extension to ground-based photography insurance cover including:

  • Public liability cover for third party incidents including personal injury and property damage
  • Loss, damage or theft of your drone anywhere in the world
  • Hi-jacking of your drone

Drone insurance is not available as a stand-alone policy or to amateur or hobbyist photographers. Your photography or videography business must also offer ground-based services – not purely drone photography.

It is important that you adhere to all of the Civil Aviation Authority’s rules and regulations which apply to you.

“The quality of the customer service is honestly excellent. Phone calls are always answered rapidly within a few rings by a real human being, always a friendly, courteous and knowledgeable one at that, who can either answer any queries directly or be able to find the answers rapidly if not.”

“An extremely helpful, friendly and professional team.  I have had my photographic equipment insured by Aaduki for a number of years and found their rates extremely competitive. I had to make two claims and in both cases, the Aaduki team were extremely helpful, friendly and professional and made the whole claim process painless. It’s a refreshing change to talk to a team who offer a personal service and are keen to repair or replace the damaged equipment as soon as humanly possible.”

FAQs

Our clients often ask us:

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) require you to have third party liability insurance if you fly a drone commercially. This includes photographers and videographers that are paid to take pictures or video footage.

As an extension to your ground-based professional photography insurance, drone insurance provides third party liability cover as well as the option to cover in the event of theft, loss or damage to your drone.

Drone insurance from Aaduki is only available as an additional cover for ground-based professional photographers and video makers.

We are unable to offer cover for amateur or hobbyist photographers and we cannot provide drone insurance cover for personal or recreational use.

The drone insurance extension from Aaduki does NOT include the following:

  • Cover for personal or recreational use, competitive purposes, including racing and stunt flying.
  • Cover for dropping items

For cover to be provided under the drone insurance extension for professional photographers and videographers, the maximum weight of the drone and payload must be below 20kg. Cover cannot be provided for fixed wing aerial vehicles.
